Driver Crashes Into Ryde Shop After Mounting Pavement

A driver has been assisted by emergency services after her car mounted the pavement and collided with the front of a shop in the centre of Ryde this afternoon (Tuesday).

Union Street was closed to traffic at around 1:50pm while emergency crews dealt with the incident.

Two fire engines, from Ryde and Newport, were sent to the scene along with Police.

Crews found a brand-new Kia Picanto had struck the front of clothing shop Zabre at low speed.

The car is fitted with an automatic gearbox and is understood to have been attempting to park when it ended up mounting the pavement and hitting the shop.

The female driver was helped out of the vehicle and given a chair to sit on, while shoppers continued to pass the scene.

Despite the collision, the Kia suffered only minimal damage to its front end.

Firefighters were able to push the vehicle back onto the road and into a nearby parking space.

Union Street has since reopened to traffic.
