Isle Of Wight Sailor Freddie Crowned Tera Sport World Champion

A talented young Isle of Wight sailor has been crowned Tera Sport World Champion following a thrilling and closely fought competition in Germany.

Freddie Harrison took gold at the World Championships in Travemünde, finishing just one point ahead of the sailor in second place.

Freddie, who is a member of Gurnard Sailing Club, faced challenging conditions throughout the competition.

High winds and heavy seas were so severe that one day of racing had to be cancelled, while the remaining races tested competitors with strong winds, big waves and, on the final day, very light winds.

However, Freddie's consistency throughout the championship proved decisive as he secured the world title.

The young sailor has been competing in the Tera class for four years and was selected for the National Performance Academy last year.

His World Championship victory is the latest in a string of impressive achievements during an outstanding 2026 season.

Freddie has already won the Tera Start of Seasons event and the Inland Championships this year, as well as finishing second overall at the National Championships.

Speaking about his latest success, Freddie said:

“It was a really close competition and the conditions were challenging, especially with the strong winds and waves.

“We didn’t know for certain that I’d won until the results came out, so it was an amazing feeling.

“I love sailing and the Tera is a fun boat and perfect for learning to sail. I’d definitely encourage other young people to give it a try.”

Freddie receives travel support from Wightlink through the Isle of Wight Council's Talented Athlete Scheme, which helps young Island athletes travel to competitions and training opportunities on the mainland.
