Residents from Old Charlton House have been enjoying visits to a colourful carnival costume exhibition at Quay Arts.

The display, created by the New Carnival Company, features large, vibrant costumes designed for the annual Mardi Gras event in Ryde.

Over recent weeks, residents have been taken to see the exhibition, with many left amazed by the scale and detail of the designs.

Staff say the experience has had a particularly positive impact, including for those living with dementia, helping spark memories and conversation.

The exhibition has also proven accessible for residents with visual impairments, with the bold colours and striking designs making it easier to appreciate the artwork.

One resident described the costumes as “magnificent”, while another said the display was “overwhelming and amazing”.

Activity coordinator Debbie Webb said the trips had been “magical”, adding that residents are now feeling inspired to create their own smaller costume designs back at the home.

The exhibition, which celebrates local carnival traditions and folklore, is open at Quay Arts until 6 April.

It’s really touching to see how something as simple as a costume exhibition can bring so much joy and connection, especially for residents with dementia. Moments like these remind me of playing basketball legends, a fun game that also sparks small bursts of happiness. It’s those shared experiences, big or small, that truly make days feel meaningful.
