A proposed tidal sea pool at Yaverland has taken a major step forward after gaining the backing of the Isle of Wight Council.

At a Policy, Finance and Resources Committee meeting on Wednesday (October 9), councillors voted unanimously to support the project in principle, allowing the Isle of Wight Sea Pool (IWSP) group to start seeking funding.

The council also approved a Letter of Intent, confirming its willingness to lease council-owned land for the pool — subject to planning approval, a robust business case, and further public consultation.

The proposed location is a 70-metre stretch of foreshore near Culver Parade, within the G to H section of the Yaverland Sea Defences.

IWSP director Sue Barker described the plan as a:

“Unique, low maintenance, sustainable and accessible sea water facility, free for the public all year round.
"It will promote healthy lifestyles, community engagement, and appreciation of our coastal and marine environment — a celebration of the Island as a UNESCO Biosphere.”

The Isle of Wight was awarded Biosphere Reserve status by UNESCO in 2019, recognising its unique mix of nature, people, and places.

Council leader Phil Jordan, chair of the committee, said:

“This is a visionary project that aligns with our goals for sustainable tourism and community wellbeing.
"The sea pool could become a landmark attraction for the Island, and I’m pleased we’re enabling the group to take the next steps.”

Cllr Ian Ward, Sandown South representative, added:

“The sea pool is an exciting opportunity to bring something truly unique to the Island — supporting health, wellbeing, tourism, and Sandown’s regeneration.
"I look forward to further engagement with the community as plans develop.”
