Sandown Bay could soon host a new eco-friendly coastal attraction after the Isle of Wight Council gave its backing for a tidal sea pool proposal to move forward.
The Isle of Wight Sea Pool group has been developing the concept for more than 18 months and received support this week from the council’s Policy, Finance and Resources Committee.
The proposed pool would sit on a 70-metre stretch of foreshore at Yaverland, near the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, and aims to offer safe, accessible seawater swimming for residents and visitors.
Councillors have agreed to issue a non-binding Letter of Intent, allowing the group to begin seeking external funding.
The letter confirms the council’s support in principle and its willingness to consider leasing the land — subject to planning approval, a strong business case, and further public consultation.
Council officers stressed that the letter does not commit the authority to any financial contribution at this stage but marks an important milestone for the project.
Cllr Phil Jordan, council leader and committee chair, said:
“This is a visionary project that aligns with our goals for sustainable tourism and community wellbeing.
"The sea pool has the potential to become a landmark attraction for the Island.”
Cllr Ian Ward, local member for Sandown South, added:
“The proposal is an exciting opportunity that supports health, wellbeing, tourism, and the regeneration of Sandown.
"I’m pleased to see it progressing and look forward to further community engagement as plans develop.”
