Private Aircraft Overturns At Sandown Airport

A private aircraft has overturned at Sandown Airport after landing on the Isle of Wight.

Emergency services were called to the airport at around 13:40 on Saturday after the light aircraft came to land and ended up upside down.

The single-seat STARLET SA500 was reportedly visiting the Island for a day trip.

The pilot was able to get out of the aircraft without assistance and was assessed by paramedics.

They suffered minor injuries, including cuts and bruising.

It is understood the aircraft initially landed safely before a strong gust of wind caught one of its wings and flipped it over.

A crew from Shanklin was dispatched by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, with firefighters making the aircraft safe and dealing with a potential fuel spill.

Police and fire crews later stood down, with firefighters returning to the station at around 14:50.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said officers were called at 13:46 by the ambulance service, reporting that a light aircraft had overturned after landing at Sandown Airport.
