A care home on the Isle of Wight has been downgraded from good to inadequate following a damning inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

Orchard House Care Centre, which is run by Barchester Healthcare, was inspected in February after concerns were raised about care standards, risk management and leadership.

Inspectors found the home had breached seven regulations, including failures around person-centred care, dignity, consent and staffing. The CQC has issued three warning notices and ordered the home to produce an action plan.

The service has been rated inadequate for being safe and effective, while caring, responsive and well-led have all been marked as requires improvement.

Inspectors described a number of serious concerns, including residents being left distressed or ignored, with some not treated with dignity.

One resident told inspectors they were frightened, while another had written “HELP” on their bedroom wall.

There were also issues around nutrition and hydration, with one resident found to have received less than half their recommended fluid intake, and another losing significant weight due to poor monitoring.

Safety concerns were also highlighted, including unreported safeguarding incidents, unsecured medicines and inaccurate medical records.

However, the report noted some positive feedback from relatives, who described staff as kind and supportive at times, and praised efforts to communicate effectively with residents who have additional needs.

The CQC says it will continue to closely monitor the service to ensure improvements are made and residents are kept safe.
