Burst Water Main Forces Fresh Closure Of Carisbrooke Road In Newport

Drivers are facing fresh disruption in Newport today (Tuesday) after a burst water main forced the emergency closure of part of Carisbrooke Road.

The closure affects the section of road between Trafalgar Road and Drill Hall Road, with repair teams expected to carry out urgent work.

The latest incident comes only days after the route reopened following separate works by Southern Water and Island Roads.

Those works were carried out to repair a collapsed sewer, while a void in the footway along The Mall was also being fixed.

This morning, water could be seen flowing through a Victorian retaining wall from the pavement alongside The Mall, highlighting the extent of the leak.

The closure is also having an impact on public transport.

Southern Vectis says Routes 6, 7, 12, 38 and 39 are all being diverted. Buses leaving Newport are travelling via Upper St James' Street and Trafalgar Road, while services heading into the town are diverting via Wellington Road and Mountbatten Drive, due to the separate closure of Whitepit Lane.

It is not yet known how long the emergency repairs will take, and motorists are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys or avoid the area where possible.
