Students at The Bay CE School are celebrating their involvement in a community project highlighting the sporting history of the Sandown area.

The “Play in the Bay” initiative, funded by the Bay Place Plan’s Past Futures Grant, has brought together schools and local groups to preserve the area’s sporting legacy and inspire future generations.

As part of the project, students interviewed a range of athletes with connections to the Bay, creating a series of podcasts which are now available online.

Those featured include a three-time Olympic table tennis player, a top-level canoeist and an FA Cup Final referee, with students capturing their stories, achievements and personal journeys.

Among the contributors, angler Kevin Sampson spoke about the popularity of fishing and environmental challenges facing the sport, while Ron Groves shared his experiences balancing RAF life with football refereeing.

Winter Olympian Andre Usborne also reflected on competing on the world stage, and boxer Ray Fallone spoke about his 100-fight career.

Students also spoke to a wide range of other local sporting figures across disciplines including football, bowls, cricket, running and rowing.

A celebration event was held at the school’s secondary site in March, bringing together students, athletes and members of the community.

The Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Susie Sheldon, unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the project, which will remain at the school.

Staff say the initiative has given students a valuable insight into the dedication required to succeed in sport, while those involved say it has been both inspiring and eye-opening.

The project aims to leave a lasting legacy by preserving the stories of local sporting figures and encouraging young people to pursue their own ambitions.

Saw this game mentioned somewhere and thought I would give it a try. In the beginning I didn’t understand what to do and didn’t enjoy it much. After spending some time, it became easier to understand. Now I play it sometimes when I have free time. It runs fine on my phone without any lag. I don’t use it daily. It’s not very exciting, but still okay for casual use and simple time pass.
