An Isle of Wight war veteran will spend his 101st birthday in hospital this week, with well-wishers being urged to send cards to help lift his spirits.
Alec Penstone is currently being cared for at St Mary’s Hospital and will be unable to return home in time for his birthday on Thursday (23rd April).
Members of the public are being encouraged to send messages of support to mark the occasion and help make the day special.
Cards can be sent to:
FAO Alec Penstone
C/O 20 West Hill Road

Alec was just 15 when World War Two began and volunteered as a part-time Air Raid Precautions messenger during the Blitz.
He has previously spoken about the impact of his wartime experiences, recalling the trauma of being involved in recovery work following air raids.
As soon as he was old enough, he joined the Royal Navy as a Hydrographic Officer and served aboard HMS Campania, an escort aircraft carrier involved in mine sweeping and anti-submarine operations.
During his service, he completed 10 Arctic Convoys — missions widely regarded as among the most dangerous of the war.
Tributes have been paid by the Royal Naval Association, which describes him as a highly valued member.
Chief Executive Capt Bill Oliphant said he was “deeply saddened” to hear of Alec’s illness, recalling his “charisma and charm” during his 100th birthday celebrations last year, where he famously spent much of the event dancing with the D-Day Darlings.
He said Alec is “a legend” and urged people to send messages to help celebrate his 101st birthday despite his illness.
