The family of 21-year-old Cassidy Ley, from Ventnor, have paid heartfelt tribute to the “determined, independent and brave” young woman following her recent passing.
Cassidy died on 1 October at Naomi House and Jacksplace Hospice.
Born at St Mary’s Hospital on 1 July 2004, she was the much-loved daughter of Tracie and Dave Ley and big sister to Franky.
A former pupil at St Francis Primary and The Island Free School, Cassidy lived her life with severe, lifelong health challenges and spent much of her time in and out of hospitals, including Great Ormond Street in London.
Despite this, her family say she lived a “short but full life,” packing in adventures, experiences and countless special moments.
Celebrant Caroline Ash, speaking at Cassidy’s funeral last month, said she faced every challenge with “determination, independence and bravery.”
A Life Filled with Passions
Cassidy adored West End theatre, especially musicals such as Six, Wicked and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. When in London for treatment, she and her mum often squeezed in a show whenever she was well enough.
A self-confessed foodie, Cassie loved pasta, cheese and anything Italian — as well as famously large breakfasts.
She also had a soft spot for crisps, and friends travelling abroad were always asked to bring back unusual flavours for her to try.
She volunteered at a playgroup in Ventnor, where she had a natural connection with young children.
Live music was another passion — Jessie J was a particular favourite — and this summer she attended Capital’s Summertime Ball at Wembley before seeing Olivia Rodrigo live.
Last year, a family friend gifted her and her mum tickets to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in London, creating cherished memories.
A highlight of her teenage years was a Dream Flight trip to Florida in 2018, where she swam with dolphins.
Love, Friendship and Courage
A hugely important part of Cassidy’s life was her girlfriend, Emily.
The pair shared many milestones and adventures, and their families say they were devoted to each other.
Early in 2024, Cassidy was given a devastating prognosis of 6–12 months to live — but, true to form, she defied expectations.
Thanks to a GoFundMe appeal organised by Liz Morris and Jodie Lacey, Cassidy was able to enjoy a series of special experiences in the final months of her life.
She also became an ambassador for Jacksplace, a role she embraced wholeheartedly.
She attended CarFest, where she met Chris Evans and even addressed the crowd — something her family say she took in her stride.
Cassidy in Her Own Words
As part of her ambassador role, Cassidy wrote openly about her life:
“I like to think of myself as shy and reserved, but also self-assured with people I know well.
"Theatre and musicals are my greatest passion — they provide a much-needed escape.”
She spoke about enjoying Isle of Wight walks, reading, embroidery and spending precious time with friends and family, adding:
“Every day is unpredictable, so we take things as they come.
"Even though my symptoms never subside, I cherish the times I can do the things that bring me joy.
"These moments remind me there is still light, even in the darkest days.”
“How Lucky I Am to Have Had Her”
At the funeral, her mum Tracie said:
“Nothing could have prepared me for losing her.
"She has left a hole so big in my heart that can never be filled.
"But how lucky am I to have had such an amazing daughter?
"Despite suffering every day, she made the most of life. I never once heard her complain or say ‘Why me?’.”
Broadcaster Chris Evans, who met Cassidy at CarFest, also sent a tribute:
“I cannot tell you how meeting her changed me as a human being.
"Cassidy instilled nothing but strength and joy.”
Thanks From the Family
Tracie Ley and Jodie Lacey expressed their gratitude to everyone who supported Cassidy, including friends, the Ventnor community, local businesses, and Isle of Wight Radio for providing IW Festival tickets.
They also offered special thanks to Naomi House and Jacksplace Hospice for their care.
