A 200-metre safety cordon has been established around a scrapyard on the outskirts of Ryde as firefighters continue to tackle a large fire involving several shipping containers.

Emergency services remain at the scene on Smallbrook Lane, where Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service crews have been working since around 10am this morning (Wednesday) to bring the blaze under control.

Firefighters from Newport, Ryde, Shanklin and Ventnor are using hose reel jets and main jets to contain the fire and stop it from spreading further.

As a precaution, a 200-metre exclusion zone has been put in place around the site.

Fire service teams will contact any residents affected by the cordon directly.

Smallbrook Lane has been closed while emergency services deal with the incident.

Members of the public are being urged to avoid the area and motorists are asked to keep nearby roads clear to allow emergency vehicles access to the scene.

Drivers should also follow any instructions from emergency personnel.

Earlier this morning, large plumes of thick black smoke could be seen rising into the sky, with nearby residents advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

Firefighters remain at the scene as work continues to bring the incident under control and make the area safe.
