Firefighters Tackle Major Scrapyard Blaze Near Ryde

Firefighters are tackling a major fire at a scrapyard on the outskirts of Ryde this morning (Wednesday).

Crews from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to the incident off Smallbrook Lane, where several shipping containers are believed to be on fire.

Large plumes of thick black smoke could be seen rising into the sky shortly before 9.45am, with residents in the surrounding area advised to keep their windows and doors closed while firefighters deal with the incident.

Fire engines from Newport, Ryde and Shanklin are at the scene, alongside a water carrier from Ventnor.

By around 10.30am, firefighters had surrounded the blaze using hose reel jets and were working to prevent the fire from spreading any further.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is expected to provide further information as the incident continues.
