Sight For Wight Short Story Competition Winners To Be Revealed

Creative Writing Competition 2020

The winner of Island charity Sight For Wight’s annual short story writing competition will be unveiled next week.

The charity, which supports visually impaired Islanders and their families will have the winning stories turned into an audiobook by a celebrity reader.

A virtual awards ceremony on Monday (8) will reveal the winners of the much-anticipated contest and include performances of carols, songs, poems and the results of the winning stories.

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, this year's theme was "The Wish" and winners will be announced in each age category.

Chris Cane, Head of Marketing and Events, said:

‘This is a great opportunity for budding Island writers to become published authors; we’ll be presenting some amazing prizes to ten very talented people. We are excited to have four celebrity readers this year, who have generously given their time to record the winning stories plus we’ve added more entertainment for the evening so I am delighted to announce our line up consisting of Hannah The Vintage Songbird, Ben Stubbs and Kelly Burke who have all kindly donated their time for us. We also have a poem from one of our volunteers although our CEO thought it a little raunchy, she still let Howard perform it!’

This year Ray Allen, playwright and script editor for the 70’s comedy, Some Mother’s Do ‘Ave ‘Em, joins comedian Jo Brand, actor Melvyn Hayes and the Island's favourite jazz singer Edana Minghella to voice the winning stories.

Lisa Hollyhead, Sight For Wight CEO added:

'The competition this year was fierce; we had 25% more stories this year than last and I cannot thank Chris enough for all the time he has volunteered to the Charity to make this possible. I don’t know how he manages to engage so many people into this event, all of whom volunteer their own time to make this event so worthwhile. Thank you everyone and well done to the winners I couldn’t put their entries down, they were all so engaging.’

The Virtual Award Ceremony will be available from 7pm on the Sight for Wight Facebook Page, their website and YouTube (Sight for Wight).
