Ryde Sinkhole Doubles In Size - Council Are Looking Into It

A sinkhole which appeared on a popular stretch of Ryde footpath last week has grown in size once more.

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, a safety cordon was put in place around the hole when an unlucky man partially fell into it - but at this time, it was roughly the size of a football.

In the week since the sinkhole was first discovered, it has grown in size considerably and is thought to now be approximately 20 feet deep.

The size of the sinkhole when it was first cordoned off last Sunday.

Last week, the Isle of Wight Council told Isle of Wight Radio:

“The Isle of Wight Council were made aware of the issue over the weekend and immediately closed the path.

“Investigations into the cause of the hole has started and planned remedial work will follow as quickly as possible.”

However, one week on, no visible work has begun to fix the sinkhole, and no further information on what will be done to rectify the issue on the busy stretch of seafront has been issued.

Larger fencing has been erected around the hole, which has more than doubled in size in just one week, and what appears to be an electric cable has now been exposed.

Ryde Rescue - which has its base just metres away from the cordon - tweeted a photo showing its growth:

We've contacted the Isle of Wight Council for an update on the situation, and asked when work will begin.
