Safety Warnings Issued As 15 Foot Sinkhole Opens Up In Appley

Visitors to Appley are being warned to 'stay on the right side of the tape' after a large sinkhole developed on the footway.

The sinkhole was originally noticed yesterday when an unfortunate walker managed to partially fall into it - although at that point, it was only a little larger than the average football.

Since it was discovered, the sinkhole has grown and is now in excess of four foot wide.

A barrier has been constructed by Island Roads staff to keep people from falling into the hole, which is estimated to be approximately 15 feet deep.

Despite warnings and obvious safety measures, Islanders are still crossing the safety line, either to catch a glimpse of the sight, or due to not understanding the danger.

In just the past few hours, more and more of the pavement surface has crumbled, and below street level the whole has opened up into a cavernous space.

We've approached Island Roads for a comment on the situation. The portion of the footpath affected remains closed.
