Dozens Dash To Save “Dying” Fish From Sandown Canoe Lake

Dozens of Islanders have descended on Sandown this evening (Tuesday) as they battle to save wildlife from a canoe lake, which is drying out because of the heat.

The lake, situated next to Dinosaur Isle, is home to an abundance of wildlife ranging from carp to swans.

However, as Isle of Wight Radio previously reported, concerns have been raised over its low water level. Residents say hot temperatures are quickly evaporating the water.

Earlier today, ward member for Sandown North, Cllr Debbie Andre said the low levels are 'of a concern', but said that the fisheries expert she had spoken to claims 'it is not at a critical stage whereby it would justify immediate action'.

Islanders have tonight taken the matter into their own hands, with dozens attempting to rescue the wildlife.

Photos also appear to show charity Blue Seas Protection assisting.

The Environment Agency has previously claimed its is against the law to relocate fish without it giving permission. Earlier this week, it said it was “investigating” the low water levels.

Isle of Wight Radio has asked whether it has authorised the move, and if not, what plans are in place to help save the fish.
