Cowes Enterprise College Celebrates World Ocean Day

Cowes Enterprise College has embraced the spirit of World Ocean Day, with both staff and students coming together to raise awareness about environmental issues through their creative talents.

A captivating art installation took centre stage, featuring stunning 3D artwork crafted by Year 9 students.

Inspired by renowned artist Courtney Mattison, who highlights coral bleaching resulting from rising sea temperatures, the installation showcased clay sea urchins and coral-like sculptures.

Vibrant colours adorned each piece, symbolising the vibrant life of a coral reef and creating a visually striking masterpiece.

On World Ocean Day, students and staff were invited to participate in workshops where they contributed to the expanding installation and created a colourful coral reef on the large windows of the Creative Area.

The college was honoured to have a Marine Biology undergraduate join the event, conducting activities related to microplastics and sharing insights with students on ways they can contribute to marine conservation efforts.

The undergraduate also encouraged involvement in local volunteer organizations like the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.

Rachel Kitley, Principal of Cowes Enterprise College, said:

"It was wonderful to see so many students and staff taking part in our World Ocean Day activities this year.

"Protecting our environment and taking part in eco-social action is something we are passionate about at Cowes Enterprise College, especially as we live on an island.

"We hope to continue to celebrate World Ocean Day each year and find ways to engage our students in ocean conservation through Art and Design and other creative avenues."
