A yellow weather warning has been issued for the Isle of Wight, with heavy rain expected to increase the risk of surface water flooding.

The warning is in place from 5am until 11.59pm tomorrow (Thursday February 5).

Forecasters say rain moving in from the south overnight is likely to become heavy and persistent in places on Thursday morning, before easing briefly.

Further organised spells of rain are then expected to arrive later in the day, again from the south.

Between 10 and 20mm of rain is forecast to fall widely by the end of Thursday, with some areas possibly seeing more than 30mm.

With ground already saturated, surface water flooding is considered likely in some locations.

Residents are being warned to expect:

  • Spray and flooding on roads, which could lead to longer journey times

  • Possible disruption to bus and train services

  • Brief interruptions to power supplies and other services

  • A small risk of flooding to homes and businesses

Difficult driving conditions are also possible, with flowing water and flooded roads creating hazards for motorists.

People are being advised to check whether their property is at risk of flooding and, if so, consider preparing a flood plan and emergency kit.

Drivers and public transport users are encouraged to check road conditions and timetables before travelling and allow extra time for journeys.

It’s also recommended that households prepare for potential power cuts by having torches, spare batteries and mobile phone power packs ready.

Weather conditions may change quickly, so residents are urged to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings.
