A yellow weather warning for ice remains in place for the Isle of Wight this morning (Wednesday) until around 11am.
The warning has been issued after a band of rain, sleet and snow left surfaces wet ahead of rapidly falling temperatures overnight.
Forecasters say skies cleared, allowing ground temperatures to drop sharply – creating widespread icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.
The Isle of Wight Met Service forecast that parts of the Island would see temperatures fall as low as –8°C or even –9°C in the coldest spots.
Hail and snow were reported in some areas, worsening conditions heading into the night.
What To Expect
Injuries from slips and falls are possible
Icy patches on pavements, cycle routes and untreated roads
Minor travel disruption likely, especially during Wednesday morning’s commute
Advice For Residents
People are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys in the morning.
Leave the house earlier than usual to avoid rushing
Where possible, stick to main roads and treated routes
Check road conditions and public transport updates before travelling
Walk carefully and consider gritted pavements along busier routes
Cyclists are advised to use main roads where safer
Stay updated as warnings and forecasts may change
The Met Office says this is a yellow warning, meaning disruption is possible but not guaranteed — however conditions could still catch people out.
The latest update was issued at 7.31pm last night, with forecasters bringing the warning start time forward due to ice forming earlier than expected in some areas.
Residents are being encouraged to stay weather aware and take extra care on Wednesday morning.
