Department – a vibrant art centre located in the heart of Ryde – is looking to expand its team of volunteers.
Opened in March this year, Department has quickly grown a reputation for fringe theatre and is a popular place to visit for its rooftop café-bar.
The brainchild of carnival company Shademakers UK, it offers a lively mix of theatre and gallery space, rehearsal and meeting rooms, artist studios and workshops.
Volunteers Manager Zoë Barker explains:
“When we welcomed our first group of volunteers to Department it was a game changer. They’ve all fitted in so well and their dedication, support and enthusiasm have really helped Department to grow and thrive. As things continue to get busier we’ve reached a point where we’re now looking to further expand our volunteers team.”
There are both daytime and evening opportunities and volunteers are free to choose whatever times suit them best. During the day, volunteers are based on the ground floor where they can work in the shop, reception and exhibitions area. In the evenings, volunteers usher for shows and other live events.
Volunteer Caroline Read says:
“When you volunteer at Department you become part of a family. The atmosphere is great, it’s an exciting place to work and the help the volunteers give is greatly valued. I volunteer in both the shop and for evening events and both have added so much enjoyment to my life.”
Volunteer Jacqui Adams adds:
“From serving in the shop, to showing visitors around the building or talking to visitors in the Poo Museum, it’s a fantastic experience. I recommend volunteering at Department to anyone interested in people, community, creativity and history.”
Department is holding two events for those wishing to know more about their volunteering opportunities. You’ll enjoy a tour around the building, hear about what’s going on and learn about the role of volunteers. There’ll be a chance to ask questions and chat with others over tea and biscuits.
Event dates:
Saturday 6th September from 2.30pm–3.30pm
Thursday 11th September from 10.30am–11.30am
To book your place please email volunteer@department-ryde.org stating which date you’d like to attend. If you think you might be interested in volunteering but are unable to make either of these dates please email to enquire about alternative times.
