A woman had to be rescued from the sea after entering the water to help a man in difficulty near Sandown Pier.

Bembridge and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams, along with several Isle of Wight Ambulance Service crews, were called to the beach at around 8pm last night (Tuesday).

Two people had been reported to be in difficulty in the water.

The woman had entered the sea to help the man but subsequently got into trouble herself and collided with the structure of Sandown Pier.

Both casualties were rescued from the water and assessed at the scene before being taken to St Mary's Hospital for further treatment.
