The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary is celebrating a major milestone in 2026 as it marks 50 years of caring for animals on the Isle of Wight.

Formerly known as the Isle of Wight Zoo, the Sandown attraction has evolved into a sanctuary focused on rescue, rehabilitation and animal welfare.

As part of its anniversary celebrations, the charity is inviting people across the Island to share their memories, photographs and memorabilia.

For decades, the sanctuary has been a popular destination for residents and visitors, with generations passing through its gates and forming lasting connections with the animals.

Now, organisers are keen to hear from former staff, volunteers, long-time supporters and visitors — as well as anyone with unique memories, including sightings of founder Jack Corney and his animals in unexpected places such as local pubs or along the beach.

Chief Executive Lawrence Bates said the anniversary is as much about people as it is about the animals.

He said the sanctuary’s history has been shaped by those who have supported it over the years, adding that there are many stories in the community that deserve to be shared.

People who would like to contribute are being encouraged to send in photos, memorabilia and personal stories via email, with selected submissions set to feature in anniversary events and online content throughout the year.

The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, based in Sandown Bay, is run by The Wildheart Trust and works to rescue animals from difficult conditions, offering them a safe place to recover while raising awareness of animal welfare issues in the UK and beyond.
