Wightlink Crews Recognised On World Maritime Day

Wightlink is highlighting the work of its crews as part of World Maritime Day today.
The ferry operator says staff regularly deal with situations beyond the routine operation of its services, including medical incidents, helping passengers in difficulty and supporting emergencies in the Solent.
In recent months, crews have assisted motorists whose vehicles have broken down onboard, responded to medical incidents, rescued a passenger who had gone overboard and supported other emergencies in the Solent.
Wightlink says these situations are rare, but can require crews to work quickly under pressure and coordinate with colleagues, shore-based teams and emergency services.
Thousands of people use the company's ferry services every day to travel between the Isle of Wight and mainland.
Wightlink Chief Executive Katy Taylor said World Maritime Day was an opportunity to recognise the skills, experience and professionalism of the people who keep the service running.
She said staff working onboard, in the ports and behind the scenes all play a vital role in keeping the Island connected.
Wightlink says every sailing involves teams including bridge crews, engineers, deck teams and passenger services staff, alongside shore-based colleagues responsible for areas including maintenance, training, operational planning and emergency preparedness.
