Night-Time Work Planned For Wootton Bridge Plane Tree

A major tree at Wootton Bridge is set to undergo specialist work to help extend its life and reduce safety risks.

Island Roads will carry out the work on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council at the large London plane tree at the entrance to Lakeside.

A large branch overhanging the road and Lakeside entrance has developed a weak joint with the main trunk and will be reduced as part of the work.

The project will also include general maintenance of the tree, which the council says is healthy and should be able to remain in place for years to come following the work.

The main road through Wootton Bridge will need to close overnight while the work is carried out.

The closures are planned for Monday, October 5 and Tuesday, October 6, between 7.30pm and 6.30am.

If weather conditions allow, the work is expected to be completed during Monday night.

A diversion will be signposted via Station Road, Briddlesford Road, The Downs, Ashey Road, Swanmore, Argyle Street, Binstead Road and Elenors Grove.

Southern Vectis will also make changes to some services between Ryde, Fishbourne Lane, Newport and Wootton Cedars while the road is closed.

Access to The Tide Mill, also known as The Sloop, will remain available from the Ryde direction.

The work has been approved through the council's planning process, with the aim of reducing the risk of branches falling while protecting the long-term health of the tree.
