Wight Games Festival Events Continue Across The Island

There are still opportunities to get involved in the first Wight Games Festival, with several events taking place across the Island later this month.

A Traditional Sports Day is being held at Quarr Abbey on August 21 and 22, bringing a modern take on the classic school sports day to the festival.

Activities will include egg and spoon races, bean bag balancing, running races and hobby horse events, with medals and certificates available.

The event is open to all ages and organisers say they are aiming to make it as accessible as possible.

It will run from 10.30am through to the afternoon in the abbey gardens, with money raised going towards three Island charities — Mountbatten Isle of Wight, Independent Arts and the Isle of Wight NHS Trust Charity.

There's also an opportunity to try something different on the water.

Island Gig Rowing Club is holding a Try Gig Rowing Day at Island Harbour on August 22, from 10am until 1pm.

The session is aimed at anyone interested in giving the sport a go, with participants advised to wear comfortable sports clothing and trainers they don't mind getting wet.

Meanwhile, the Isle of Wight Federation of Women's Institutes is holding its rescheduled kurling event at Northwood Village Hall on Thursday, August 20.

The sport is similar to curling, but is played without ice.

That session runs from 2pm until 4pm.

There will also be cricket sessions at Northwood on August 22 and 26.

The Wight Games Festival was launched this year to raise money for the three Island charities.

Founder Mike Christie says he's pleased with the support the event has received and hopes to bring it back in 2027.
