Temperatures soared across the Isle of Wight today, with many weather stations reporting highs of more than 38°C.

To verify the readings, local weather experts visited several of the hottest reporting locations, carrying out their own measurements within 200 yards of the weather stations using mobile monitoring equipment.

The checks found that while a small number of stations were recording temperatures slightly higher than the actual air temperature, the vast majority were within half a degree of the independent measurements.

As a result, forecasters say they have a high level of confidence that most of the Island's weather stations were providing accurate and reliable data, despite the extreme conditions.

The final temperature map combines readings from weather stations with the additional field measurements.

Multiple locations recorded temperatures of 38°C and 39°C, with clusters of similar readings helping to confirm the accuracy of the data collected across the Island.
