People on the Isle of Wight are being urged to stay vigilant after a rise in reports of counterfeit banknotes.
Officers say fake notes are often mixed in with genuine cash, meaning both customers and businesses are being encouraged to check money carefully when handling it.
The Bank of England warns that counterfeit notes will not be reimbursed, leaving anyone who accepts them out of pocket.
Police are advising that if you come across a suspected fake note, it should be reported and will be seized as part of enquiries.
In an emergency situation – such as if a crime is in progress or there is an immediate risk – people should call 999.
For non-emergency incidents, reports can be made via Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary.
Anyone with information about the production or use of counterfeit money can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
Residents are being encouraged to share the warning with friends and family to help prevent others from falling victim.
