A key ATM has been reinstated in Shalfleet, restoring a service that many residents of the rural Isle of Wight village rely on daily.

The new free-to-use cash machine is now fully operational at Shalfleet Village Stores, following the withdrawal of the previous facility.

Last autumn, Shalfleet Parish Councillor Jonathan Hill wrote to ATM provider NCR Atleos to challenge the removal, describing it as a “dereliction of corporate responsibility.”

He urged the company to reconsider the decision, highlighting the impact on the local community.

Cllr Hill said the withdrawal had come via an abrupt email, citing insufficient profitability, with no consultation or notice for residents.

Speaking on the reinstatement, Cllr Hill described the ATM as “a vital service” that helps keep the village connected and supported.

He said:

“Shalfleet residents will be pleased to hear that a brand‑new, free-to-use ATM is now fully installed and operational at Shalfleet Village Stores, restoring a service that many in our rural community rely on every day.
“The return of cash access is the result of determined, collaborative effort.
"Access to cash remains essential for many local residents, particularly older people and those living in rural areas where bank branches have disappeared.
“This is a genuine local success story and a reminder of what can be achieved when a community stands together.
"Our thanks go to everyone involved.”

The reinstatement ensures Shalfleet residents once again have convenient access to cash, supporting the village’s day-to-day life and resilience.
