A historic Cowes pub dating back to the 1500s could soon get a modern makeover, with plans submitted for a new roof terrace and pergola.

The Union Inn’s owner, Mr Parker, hopes the additions will boost the venue’s appeal — especially during the busy summer months, when the pub currently has no outdoor seating.

According to LMA Heritage Consultancy, the proposed terrace would give customers a comfortable outdoor space with welcome shade, helping the business compete with other nearby pubs and restaurants that already offer open-air areas.

The application says the terrace would close to the public at 10pm — an hour before last orders — to keep noise levels respectful.

A slatted timber screen is also planned to create a courtyard-style feel while preventing overlooking of neighbouring properties.

The planning application (25/01681/FUL) is open for public comments until December 30, with a decision due on January 16.
