Global transport company Uber has been given the green light to operate on the Isle of Wight.
The multinational firm has secured a private hire operator’s licence from the Isle of Wight Council, allowing it to set up services on the Island.
Uber says it sees strong demand locally — particularly during major events like the Isle of Wight Festival — and is now working on plans to launch in the coming months.
A spokesperson for the company says the move will provide a safe, affordable and convenient way for people to get around, while also creating new earning opportunities for local drivers.
They add that drivers using the platform have access to benefits including holiday pay, pensions, and union representation.
Uber operates via a smartphone app, connecting passengers with drivers as an alternative to traditional taxi services.
The Isle of Wight Council says its licensing team will continue working with Uber as it prepares to roll out operations on the Island.
