Police have confirmed that two people arrested on suspicion of murdering 17-month-old Jayla-Jean McLaren have been released on conditional bail, as investigations into her tragic death continue.

The toddler’s death on Sunday 3 August has deeply affected the Isle of Wight community, prompting an outpouring of grief for Jayla-Jean.

On Friday 1 August, the young child was taken from her home in Dairy Crest Drive, Newport, to St Mary’s Hospital with serious injuries.

She was later airlifted to Southampton General Hospital for specialist treatment.

Despite the best efforts of medical teams, she sadly died two days later.

A 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman from Newport, who had caring responsibility for Jayla-Jean, were initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They were re-arrested on suspicion of murder on Thursday, as previously reported.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has now confirmed both have been released on conditional bail until 12 November.

Enquiries are ongoing.
