A traffic light at one of the Island’s busiest junctions has been destroyed after a car crashed into it on Tuesday evening.

Police were called to Westridge Cross in Ryde shortly before 10pm after a white Suzuki Vitara collided head-on with the traffic signal on Brading Road.

The vehicle then rolled back slightly and came to a stop on Bullen Road.

No injuries have been reported, according to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.

A spokesperson said:

"This was a single vehicle RTC reported to us at 9:26pm last night (Tuesday 31 March). No injuries were reported."

Island Roads are now on site to assess the damage and determine whether temporary traffic lights will be needed while repairs are carried out.

Drivers are being urged to take care in the area, with recent road traffic incidents at Downend and Newport Road, Lake, causing extended delays in the past.

Motorists are advised to expect some disruption around Westridge Cross until the situation is resolved.
