Two teenagers aged 16 and 17 have been released on bail until May 22 following a police pursuit which ended in a crash in Sandown.

Three other boys — two aged 16 and one aged 15 — have been released under investigation.

Five teenagers were originally arrested after the vehicle they were travelling in failed to stop for police and later crashed during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were on patrol shortly before 1.30am when they observed a car being driven erratically along The Fairway in Sandown.

When attempts were made to bring the vehicle to a stop, the driver did not comply and instead made off in the direction of Lake.

The pursuit was brought to a swift conclusion when officers located the vehicle at the bottom of Lake Hill.

The car had collided with a wall and a parked vehicle outside a residential property.

Police confirmed that five teenagers, aged between 15 and 17, were arrested in connection with the incident.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, drink driving, aggravated vehicle taking and going equipped for theft.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, going equipped for theft, aggravated vehicle taking and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Two 16-year-old boys and a 15-year-old boy were also arrested on suspicion of going equipped for theft and aggravated vehicle taking.

Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
