A suspected drink driver has been arrested after being stopped in Ryde town centre this afternoon (Saturday).

Police were alerted just after 4pm when a member of the public called 999 to report concerns about a van being driven erratically along Ryde Pier.

It’s understood a group of men had disembarked from the FastCat service at the pier head, with two of them then getting into a Ford Transit van.

The vehicle was reportedly seen swerving as it made its way along the pier.

Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were dispatched and located the distinctive Island Facility Services (IFS) van a short time later on Cross Street in Ryde town centre.

The van was boxed in by police and two men were detained at the scene.

The driver was arrested after carrying out a roadside breath test and was placed into a police van.

He has since been taken to Newport Police Station, where he is due to undergo an evidential breath test and further questioning.

Police have been approached for comment.
