Survey Highlights Impact Of June Heatwave On Islanders

A survey by the Isle of Wight Green Party suggests more than 85 per cent of respondents were affected by June's heatwave, with many reporting health, financial and wellbeing concerns.

The party received responses from 273 Islanders during July. Difficulty sleeping was the most commonly reported issue, while many respondents also said they experienced dehydration or felt unwell during the hot weather.

More than 60 per cent said the heatwave had increased household costs through higher energy and water use, the purchase of cooling equipment or lost income.

Pet owners also reported difficulties keeping animals safe during the extreme temperatures.

The survey gathered practical suggestions for coping with future heatwaves, including keeping homes shaded, opening windows overnight, checking on vulnerable neighbours and ensuring pets have access to water and cool spaces.

The Green Party says the findings highlight the impact prolonged hot weather can have on Island communities.
