The Isle of Wight’s hospital will get a new eight-bed ward to support surgery recovery.

Isle of Wight NHS Trust plans to demolish existing administration offices and consulting rooms belonging to St Mary’s Hospital’s Mottistone Ward, replacing them with an eight single bedroom extension, have been accepted by council officers.

The new facility would be located to the north of the hospital and linked to an existing corridor connecting the Mottistone Ward with the rest of the North Hospital, according to a Design and Access Statement from consultants ERMC.

It said:

“The extension is replacing an existing structure on the site and making good use of an existing built area rather than using landscaped or green areas within the existing complex.”

Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council supported the application:

“Members wished to welcome the expansion of beds at St Marys, which should ease pressure on our hospital services.
“There is a real need for post-surgery recovery beds, and this purpose-built modern extension will be a positive addition.
“We note that this is a previously developed site, and a replacement of outdated modular buildings that are not fit for purpose and will also not result in the loss of any car park spaces.”

The Isle of Wight Council’s decision report on proposal 25/01033/FUL said:

“The development would support improved healthcare provision for the local community, through the improvement of existing facilities.”
