A significant sewage mains burst in East Cowes has left parts of Old Road and Millfield Road flooded with wastewater overnight, with the force of the incident lifting sections of the road surface.
During the early hours of this morning (Tuesday), a river of sewage began flowing down Old Road following a burst at the top of Millfield Avenue.
Several gardens have been flooded with sewage as a result, with Millfield Road now completely closed.
Utility crews from Southern Water are on scene, with repair work underway on the damaged sewer.
Access to Holy Cross Primary School is currently limited, with motorists advised to avoid the area where possible.
Councillor Karl Love said his “thoughts are with the residents” affected by the incident, adding that there is “a river of sewage running down Old Road”.
He also advised against swimming off East Cowes beach until the extent of the spill is known.
