Plans to create an outdoor seating area at Fumo33 in Ryde have sparked objections from a neighbouring pharmacy and other local residents.
Russell Canterbury, representing Gibbs and Gurnell Pharmacy on Union Street, said the proposed expansion could be “selfish” and a “massive disservice” to other local businesses.
He expressed concerns that the seating would encroach on the nearby parking area, making it harder for elderly customers to access the pharmacy.
“Should they require more space, there is a vacant unit at 49 Union Street available for rental directly opposite their premises.
"What we need along Union Street is more parking and a speed reduction in the street to 20 miles per hour to aid with parking on a rather difficult slope amongst a pedestrianised area,” Mr Canterbury added.
The restaurant’s Design and Access Statement argues that the seating would benefit customers while mirroring the style of other approved outdoor areas on Union Street, including the Festival Diner Bar.
The proposal is also described as potentially enhancing the shopping and holiday environment, making the area more attractive for both Island residents and tourists.
Public consultation on the application (25/01141/FUL) runs until September 19, with a council decision expected on October 13.
