Rookley Skate Park Set For Major Upgrade

Rookley Skate Park is set to get bigger and gain a number of new obstacles, following a major project by local organisation Wight Trash.

The group has been working on the skate park, also known as Trash Park, for around 12 years, with the support of Rookley Parish Council.

The latest work will increase the size of the park and introduce a number of new features, including a line of street-style kerbs and a Jersey barrier – which Wight Trash says will be the first of its kind at a skate park on the Island.

An existing yellow underground pipe, which has been part of the park since it opened, will also remain.

Wight Trash says the new additions are intended to provide challenges for experienced skaters while remaining accessible to beginners.

The project has been supported by volunteers, as well as a number of local companies which have donated time and resources or provided equipment and materials at reduced cost.

Rookley Parish Council has also contributed £2,000 towards the latest phase of the work.

The wider area around the skate park includes green space, swings and a basketball hoop, with plans for a community fruit tree garden later in the year.

Wight Trash is also producing a documentary charting the history of the skate park, including its appearance in skateboarding magazine Thrasher and footage of its development over the years.

Further ramps and obstacles are planned for 2027, with the latest work expected to be completed shortly.
