The RNLI has confirmed it will close its lifeboat manufacturing site in East Cowes, ending more than 60 years of production on the Island.
All inshore lifeboat building will be transferred to the charity’s Lifesaving Support Centre in Poole, with operations on the Isle of Wight expected to wind down by the end of 2027.
The Inshore Lifeboat Centre, which opened in 1963, currently produces and maintains up to 80 vessels each year, including B class and D class lifeboats, as well as inshore rescue boats used by lifeguards.
The decision follows a review of the charity’s future requirements, with the Poole site able to accommodate a broader range of manufacturing needs. The East Cowes facility is also understood to require significant investment to meet modern standards.
The move raises concerns about the loss of skilled jobs and specialist marine expertise on the Isle of Wight.
The RNLI says it will work with affected staff over the coming months and years, exploring options including redeployment and support as the transition progresses.
