Old life rings from Wightlink ferries are being given a second life — helping to entertain giraffes at Marwell Zoo.
The cross-Solent operator donated surplus equipment after routine safety upgrades, rather than sending the items to waste.
Zoo keepers then repurposed the rings into elevated feeders filled with treats, encouraging the giraffes to stretch and forage naturally.
Staff at Marwell say the animals have responded well, with the enrichment helping to keep them active and engaged.
The zoo now plans to adapt more of the donated rings for other animals, including bongos, kudus and tapirs.
Wightlink says the initiative is part of its ongoing efforts to reuse materials where possible, with previous donations supporting animal charities on the Isle of Wight.
The company is encouraging other organisations who could make use of surplus equipment to get in touch.
