A World War Two radar station at one of the Isle of Wight’s highest points could undergo ‘essential repair work’, ensuring its ‘continued survival’.

Howard Carter has lodged a Listed Building Consent application for repairs to the Grade II listed Old Radar Station on St. Boniface Down above Ventnor.

The aim of the proposal is to ‘stabilise and repair’ parts of the structure which have ‘deteriorated over time’ because of weathering, a statement from thinkingspace architects says.

These include the brickwork of the main receiver building and low retaining wall and concrete retaining walls.

The statement says:

“Ventnor Radar Station played a significant role in the Battle of Britain and is a poignant reminder of this crucial period of our history.

“The existing buildings are simple and robust, but some elements require repair to prevent further, possibly accelerating, deterioration and allow them to function properly.

“The repairs proposed here would retain the building’s appearance, special interest and character while ensuring its continued survival.”

County Hall’s public consultation on proposal 25/01328/LBC finishes on October 17 and a decision is expected on November 12.
