Princess Royal Officially Opens New Albany Green Public Space In East Cowes

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has officially opened a new public seating area at Albany Green in East Cowes, marking the completion of a project to transform an underused section of the Esplanade.

The Princess Royal was the guest of honour as she unveiled the revitalised public space, which features new seating, planting, soft landscaping and a traditional wrought iron arch celebrating the area's heritage.

During the visit, Her Royal Highness toured the site, viewed the new elliptical seating area overlooking the Solent towards Cowes and unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the official opening.

She also unveiled a new historic propeller monument, recognising East Cowes' rich maritime and industrial heritage, before meeting and speaking with local stakeholders involved in the project.

The revamped public space includes seating positioned to take advantage of the sunset views across the Solent, while a small raised platform has been incorporated to allow for pop-up events throughout the year.

The all-weather area also provides a sheltered place for local workers, residents and visitors to relax.

Traditional iron railings surround a heritage-inspired landscaped garden, with new shrubs planted to boost biodiversity and create a more welcoming community space in an area that had previously seen little use.

The project was funded by the Government through the Levelling Up Fund and delivered by Isle of Wight Council, with works carried out by Island contractor Crown Park.

Construction began earlier this year after the Mayor of East Cowes, Councillor Tracey Reardon, performed the ceremonial first dig.

"This project has turned an underused area into an attractive and accessible public space that residents, visitors and local workers can enjoy throughout the year.

"The new seating, planting, landscaping and heritage features reflect the character and history of East Cowes, while creating a welcoming place to sit, meet and enjoy the spectacular views across the Solent.

"I also want to give my thanks to contractors ERMC and Crown Park for their efforts on this project."
