The NHS in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight has today launched this year’s spring COVID-19 vaccination campaign offering vital protection to those most at risk from the virus.
The campaign runs from today (13 April) to 30 June and focuses on protecting some of the most vulnerable members of the community.
Those eligible for a free vaccine are:
People aged 75 years and over
Residents in care homes
Adults and children aged six months and over with a weakened immune system
Individuals considered to have a weakened immune system include those:
Living with HIV
Who have received an organ, bone marrow, or stem cell transplant
Undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy
With genetic conditions affecting the immune system
Taking medications that suppress immune response
Dr Zaid Hirmiz, GP and Deputy Chief Medical Officer for NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight, said:
“Although life has largely returned to normal for many of us, COVID-19 has not gone away and continues to circulate within our communities.
“For those who are more vulnerable, whether due to age or underlying health conditions, the spring vaccination offers important additional protection and helps lower the chances of becoming seriously unwell or needing hospital care.
“People may question why further doses are needed, but this is because viruses naturally evolve over time. Vaccines are updated accordingly to ensure they continue to provide the strongest possible defence.”
There are several convenient ways for eligible individuals to receive their vaccination.
Many people will be contacted directly by their GP practice, but those who are eligible do not need to wait for an invitation.
Appointments can be booked via the National Booking System, the NHS App, or by calling 119.
Details of any roving clinics will also be updated on the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight’s vaccinations page.
This year’s spring campaign aims to reach the 296,180 eligible people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, helping to reduce serious illness and protect those most at risk.
Anyone unsure about their eligibility, or who needs support with booking an appointment, can contact the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight COVID Vaccination Helpline on 0300 561 0018.
