Between 1.50pm and 2pm, a 44-year-old man was reportedly punched to the ground.

He was later found by officers on patrol on the High Street, at the junction with Albert Road.

The man was taken to hospital with head injuries, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

A 41-year-old man from Sandown was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He has been released on conditional bail until 24 November while enquiries continue.

Investigating officer DC Clare Maycock said:

“This assault has led to the victim being seriously injured and he remains in hospital.
"Officers have carried out enquiries in the area, but we still need your help to progress our investigation.
"Anyone with video doorbell or dashcam footage from the area at the time who hasn’t already spoken to us should contact us as soon as possible.
"Your video may show the victim or the person that assaulted him in the area, even if it didn’t capture the incident itself.
"We’re also keen to speak to any other witnesses in the area who haven’t already come forward.”
