A proposal to install a 120-metre solar panel array near the Isle of Wight National Landscape has met opposition from Calbourne Parish Council and Island Roads.

The renewable energy project — put forward by Mr and Mrs Pearce — would see a double row of solar panels and associated infrastructure built on land at Dodpits Lane, near Chessell.

According to a Planning, Design and Access Statement from SJC Town and Country Planning Consultancy, the installation would contribute to the Island’s transition toward low-carbon energy and promote sustainable rural development.

The report adds that the panels have been “discreetly positioned to minimise visual impact,” integrating with the site’s natural contours to “preserve the countryside aesthetic” and “respect the rural character of Dodpits Lane and the wider area.”

It also states the proposal would have “no impact on hedgerows, trees or ecological corridors,” and that the installation would be fully reversible and non-invasive.

However, Calbourne Parish Council has raised strong objections, citing safety concerns over access to the site.

A spokesperson said:

“The council discussed this application and the accessibility to the site.
"The council felt the access onto the site was not suitable and were concerned about the visibility when entering and leaving the site.
"Because of their concerns that could affect road users’ safety, the council objects to this planning application.”

Island Roads has also objected, describing the access as a “highway safety issue” due to “substandard visibility splays,” and said the entrance was “unsatisfactory to serve the proposed development.”

The Isle of Wight Council’s public consultation on the application (reference 25/01526/FUL) runs until November 21, with a decision expected on December 12.
