A new home-based beauty salon could be opening in a Sandown garden, with the planning application sparking mixed responses from local residents.
Caymen Collins, a beauty therapist with over 16 years’ experience on the Isle of Wight, has proposed converting an outbuilding at 8 Queens Road into a sustainable salon.
The business would operate by appointment only, Monday to Friday from 8am to 7pm, and on Saturdays from 8am to 2pm.
Documents submitted with the application state the salon would include a massage couch, manicure table, seating area, storage, and a worktop, and would be run solely by Ms Collins.
The statement adds that noise and disturbance would remain minimal.
However, some local residents have raised concerns.
Karen Marlene cited parking, traffic, and pedestrian safety issues, saying:
“This is a residential area - with a business permitted, matters will become even worse.
"There are plenty of buildings in Sandown High Street for a business if you want to start one.”
Three comments in support of the application have also been submitted.
Supporters highlight minimal disruption, mental health benefits, and a calmer, more personal service than town centre salons.
Sandown resident Paula Hanmore said:
“From a community perspective, I feel this proposal is a positive use of an existing outbuilding, supports local self-employment, and provides a convenient service for nearby residents.”
The public consultation for the application (ref: 25/01857/FUL) closes on Friday, February 6, with a decision expected on March 4.
