Red Funnel has been given the go-ahead to transform its East Cowes port – a project the ferry operator says will create a “welcoming, efficient and resilient” new gateway to the Isle of Wight.
The plans, which cover three key sites, aim to modernise the waterfront, ease congestion in East Cowes and significantly improve the passenger experience.
The scheme updates an earlier version approved in 2017 and is described as essential for meeting the Island’s future transport needs.
CEO Fran Collins said the decision marks “a big milestone” for both the company and the town.
She added:
“We’re delighted Members have resolved to approve our planning application.
"Our plans will create spaces that feel welcoming for everyone, make our services more resilient and ease local congestion.
"These proposals have been shaped by local voices, and we’ll continue working closely with the community throughout the project.”
Red Funnel says the redevelopment will deliver a cleaner, more resilient port for “decades to come”, supporting economic growth and the Island’s long-term connectivity.
What’s Included in the Redevelopment
A new, upgraded terminal to speed up travel and improve comfort
Better pedestrian access and landscaping along the waterfront
A 350-space marshalling yard to ease traffic on local roads
Automated check-in and redesigned traffic flow to cut queueing
A revamped Phoenix Yard, with potential for shops, a hotel and new employment opportunities
Improved links to the town centre, including new bus laybys
What Happens Next
Red Funnel will now begin detailed design work before moving to tender and construction.
The company says it will continue working with residents and local stakeholders, with further updates expected in the coming months.
More information about the scheme is available on Red Funnel’s project website.
