A picturesque Isle of Wight village could get a ‘transformative new visitor experience’.
The National Trust has put forward plans to County Hall for the ‘Mottistone Hub’ – a facility comprising three self-contained buildings under a barn canopy at Mottistone Manor Farm.
Application 25/01040/FUL also includes a new footpath, walking route, picnic/play areas to the south of the barn and accessible parking bays.
The outdoor hub will have free entry and ‘provide amenities, promote the advantages of the countryside, the outdoors and open up the area and rights of way network to more users, walkers of all ages and cyclists’, according to the National Trust’s agent, ERMC.
The consultancy’s Design and Access Statement says:
“The design proposal makes use of a current barn on Mottistone Manor Farm and a small portion of the farmland surrounding the barn.
“Block One will house WCs, urinals, accessible WC and accessible changing, along with a bicycle lock up.
“Block Two consists of a staff room and plant room.
“Block Three is the largest block with an all-weather space. A concession stand for a grab and go food and beverage truck will also be provided.
“New paths from the outdoor hub will further connect tourists and locals to the surrounding landscape.”
Jennie Healey, project manager for the National Trust Isle of Wight, said:
“The Mottistone Hub will offer a warm welcome to visitors at the heart of one of the Island’s most breath-taking landscapes.
“This is about more than just access – it’s about creating opportunities for everyone to feel part of these places, to learn about our conservation work and to experience the benefits of nature all year round.
“As a charity, we are so grateful to our supporters for bringing this project to life.”
The council’s public consultation on the proposal closes on September 1 and a decision has been scheduled for September 23.
